I am having trouble getting dvd+rw data discs to burn. One burn worked, but when I went to do a second burn, it failed each and every time I tried it. All of the discs (including the one that worked) were from the same package of Hewlett Packard discs.
The software seems to see the disc as present, but the burn always fails with an input/output error. I've tried with Gnomebaker, Brasero, and growisofs. I get the same results with all of them. CD-RWs burn fine.
Several hours of searching has turned up no real answers or suggestions, so I hope someone here can help. Thanks.
Walt
Hallo Walt_H!
You can update the dvd+rw-tools with synaptic, if you would please.
This can solved these problem, i think you use the SAM 2007... it's right, then
you can go in synaptic, change the prefered version of install packages to "hold the installed
version as prefered"
i hope this help you
@ Walt_H,
a other thing is the problem with the thunar preferences, if you burned a DVD thunar would mount and open it???
So you can avoid these in the preferences dialog from thunar under media management, otherwise the wodim
engine ( this is the execute from all other burnerGUI's) will not refreshing the device status.
I don't know, which words can published this fact exactly, probed this if you would please.

I couldn't figure how to "hold the installed version as preferred" but I think I have the latest version of dvd+rw-tools, 7.0-4pclos2007. At least there was no upgrade available.

I'm not sure how or where to change this.I don't see a media management option in thunar preferences. Do I actually need a burned DVD in the drive?
On the other hand, it does not try to mount the blank dvd, and actually tells me I can't mount a blank dvd when I try to do that.
Sorry to be so dense about this.
Walt

That's are right!
But i can't know, which SAM-version are run by you.
If you have updated from GnomeBaker to Brasero?
Please lett me know more things about from your system and applications, if you would please!
Sorry to be so late responding. I have been out of town for the last week. I am running SAM.2007. I now have Brasero installed, but I have the same trouble with it as I had with Gnomebaker.
My system has an AMD Sempro 2200+ processor with 768mb RAM. My DVD burner is a Matshita DVD-RAM SW-9585. It works fine for burning CDs, and it usually sees the blank DVDs but fails to burn them except for the one time I was actually able to burn a data DVD.
Thanks for trying to help! I welcome any ideas.

AHA! I had the same problem with my laptop, these comes original with a Matshita DVD device, this can't used the udma mode for corresponding with the processor or the memory on this machine, i had changed this devise to a Samsung and all works good in times to now.
for information: Matshita is constructed more for Windows, there are not use a directly heading for to drives or devices
Please probe follows:
open a terminal and type:
[onkelho@localhost ~]$ /sbin/hdparm -i /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc = your burner drive , must changed
AND PLEASE POST THE OUTPUT HERE!
then i will tell you more to solving
Funny, the machine was purchased as a Linux system from Microtel (preloaded with Xandros, which I never liked - but which I suppose may have supported the burner). Anyway, here is what I get from running the code you supplied:
/dev/hdc:
Model=MATSHITADVD-RAM SW-9585, FwRev=B100, SerialNo=
Config={ Fixed Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }
RawCHS=0/0/0, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0
BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=0kB, MaxMultSect=0
(maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: sdma0 sdma1 sdma2 mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2 udma3 udma4
AdvancedPM=no
Drive conforms to: Unspecified: ATA/ATAPI-3 ATA/ATAPI-4 ATA/ATAPI-5 ATA/ATAPI-6
* signifies the current active mode
I hope this can be made to work as buying a new burner is not an option at present, and it does work fine for burning CDs. Thanks.
Thanks, this are what i would to know, so i can tell you, your burner is full supported.
The kernel and all other dependencies works good with this drive!
So i will search, what's are the problem under SAM2007.
Before; you would not update your system or is this a possibility for you???
