HowTo für SAM-Linux (by FOXswiss translated by Yogibaer)

Why and when do you need 3D-acceleration?

Quite simple: for playing games, for screen savers based on GL, and for a better performance in 3D-desktop effects. For surfing the internet the 3D acceleration is not so important but scrolling large webpages in opera as an example is really faster. Games, which are based on 3D acceleration, as an example Scorched 3D, it is necessary to have the 3D acceleration active. Without it the motion in the 3D-games is not flawless.

How can I figure out whether the 3D acceleration is active?

Type in the terminal the word gears. Some rotating gears appear on the desktop. If they rotate flawless all is ok and 3D is active.
Is it not the case 3D is not active.
(Advanced users can type in glxgears and you will see in addition the fps-values.)

How to install my graphics-card driver?

This should be done in SMART or synaptic. Seaqrch for ati and choose the right driver. Download it. After installation the desktop gets black for 10 seconds, and opens up again. Type in a console again gears an look if the gears rotate smoothly. If not reboot your computer. If the gears are not running smoothly after reboot, read the section in the bottom.

How to configure the driver?

Open the PCLinuxOS control center via the xfce-menu. Open in the hardware-section the option graphical server. Here should be written fgrlx if you own an ATI.
Is this is the case and the gears are not running smoothly take a look to the options. Aside translucency all should be activated.
Is it not fglrx, change it to fglrx.
The tool should be selfdescribing if you are using only one monitor. (In the end the question do you want to use the proprietary driver should be answered with yes. Also the dialog boxes should be answered with yes/ok/accept.
After approving the settings reboot the computer and restart gears.

My monitor starts to flicker.

To prevent this open the PCLinuxOS control center via the xfce-menu. Open in the hardware-section the option monitor. Here you can change the settings of the monitor. A good setting is 1280x1024 @ 74 / 76 Hz.

The X-server is crashed with ATI: Whats to do?

If the X-server is crashed, no problem. You are in the console. So type in drakx11 and choose the stable vesa-driver. after doing so type in startx and all should be ok aside 3D. This is not possible with vesa. For using 3D acceleration you have to use the fgrlx-driver.
